Microdermabrasion
Performed in Dr. Arons’ office, microdermabrasion is a noninvasive mechanical resurfacing technique that has been used in Europe for many years, recently gaining popularity in the United States. Microdermabrasion is a painless procedure that does not require any anesthesia. It combines a mechanical scraping of the skin, along with a vacuum to suction away skin debris.
As skin ages and becomes sun damaged, it loses its elasticity, becomes thinner and discolored. The texture of the skin becomes rough. Microdermabrasion can improve the texture and color of the skin; the skin becomes thicker and there is a more youthful appearance.
The repeated scraping of the outer layers of skin over time, with frequent microdermabrasion procedures, stimulates collagen production and skin cell proliferation, thereby leading to an overall improved appearance of the skin. Scientific studies of microdermabrasion were able to demonstrate improvements in skin rejuvenation through an increase in skin thickness, due to an increase in epidermal thickness and collagen organization. Usually, at least six treatments are necessary.
