Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser
Carbon dioxide laser is another non-surgical technique offered by Dr. Arons to promote skin rejuvenation. To be sure, however, the laser is a powerful instrument that gently burns the outer layers of the skin while promoting formation of new skin elements, thereby resulting in a fresher more youthful look.
Sun damage, age spots, and wrinkles can be removed and improved. In laser resurfacing, a beam of laser energy is used to vaporize the upper layers of damaged skin with accurate precision. As new cells form during the healing process, a smoother tighter younger looking skin surface appears.
During the procedure, the activated lasers carefully pass back and forth over the skin until the correct safe level is reached, where the wrinkle or scar will become less visible. If the imperfections are deep, we may recommend that the resurfacing be performed in two or more stages. Current technology has rendered the laser safer with fewer complications. Most patients heal rapidly after treatment with low incidents of complications. Redness and swelling are normal consequences of any laser procedure. Sometimes the redness can last for weeks, although it usually resolves. Some patients develop cold sores or infections when laser treatment is performed around the mouth, and therefore medications must be taken prior to laser treatment. Also, to improve the chance for a good result, the skin must be pretreated for several weeks in advance of the laser treatment. Initial healing usually takes approximately one week, although redness may last longer. Most patients may resume social activities by approximately two weeks. Sometimes revisions are necessary. Sometimes there is discoloration of the treated area that requires application of additional medications. Results are considered permanent.
